Wishing to make application to Gen. O.O. Howard
Comm Bureau for an appropriation to build a School House at what is called Grant's Colony.
I deem it best to do so through thee and to present the case fairly it will be necessary to go a little into details.
Geo. W. Grant, a citizen of above County, has colonized his former slaves, also giving other colored persons the same opportunities, by leasing to each family a portion of land sufficient for a farm with the privilege of buying on favorable terms if they wish, either before or when the lease expires. In this Colony and near it, are probably more than one hundred colored children of a suitable age to go to school, who have had almost no school privileges; and I believe no aid has been rendered by the Bureau.
