Calvert, Texas May 14, 1870 L.W. Stevenson Supt. Education &c. Dear Sir: Your favor of the 9th inst. was received to-day. I sent General Howard the deed as per your instructions: The school business in Calvert would succeed very well were it not for a a strong Rebel feeling against it: The rebel feeling is so strong here that loyal people have to depend on themselves as far as protection may go.
