"PENTECOST"

Marble high relief - fragment

Height (at highest point): 11-1/2"
Width 6-1/2"

Numerous traces of gilding and polychromy.

The central figure of the Virgin is seated serenely, turned three-quarters to the right in an attitude of prayer. Her mantle falls in graceful sinuous curves about her knees and feet. At her right is the beardless St. John, holding a book, and to her left and behind is another seated disciple, raising his hands in a gesture of surprise. The head of a standing disciple and part of the face of another appear above them at left.

The marble block is broken diagonally across the top, from the head of the standing figure towards the forehead of St. John. As usual, the figures are carved from the block of marble; the back of the relief is flat.
