I have the honor to submit the following statement

Agreeable to your order I visited Austin, and endeavoured to obtain a room or building in which to establish a school for the Freed people

I met with great opposition from the white popalation and parties who owned or controlled property refused to allow me the use of a room for that purpose

I was informed by the Freedmen of that city that they had an interest in the M.E. Church edifice although this fact was denied by the present pastor and one of the trustees

On enquiring of the white people, I found it could be easily proven that they had paid the sum of Six Hundred and Fifty-seven Dollars and
