Supt Schools

I visited Austin & endeavored to obtain a room or building in which to establish a school for the freed people I met with opposition from the white population & parties who owned or controlled property refused to allow one the use of a room for that purpose I was informed by the freedmen that they had an interest in the M. E. Church edifice although this fact was denied by those people present Pastor and one of the trustees on enquiring of the white people. I found it could easily be proven that they had paid the sum of $657.50 I therefore applied to the Post Com-(Maj Storr)for an order to use the said basement, which was readily granted. I have organized a day school for children and a night school for the Adult Freedmen of Austin Each school opened with 80 scholars on the register and more than 50 actually present. x x x x x x
