Office Superintendent of Education, OF REFUGEES AND FREEDMEN, STATE OF TEXAS. Galveston, February 17th, 1866. E.M. Wheelock Supt Schools State of Texas Agreeable to Special Orders No 33 Head Quarters Bureau Refugees Freedmen and ALands Galveston Texas February 7th 1866. I visited the towns of Houston Millican and Richmond and submit the following report At Houston there are four (4) organized schools for Freedmen and 6 Teachers The first and largest is taught by Mr Stuart [[strikethrough]] and was [[/strikethrough]] who is assisted by Miss Watson with 146 scholars present Mr Stuart was very desirous of securing the services of another asst Teacher and reported and increase of 10 scholars daily Miss Byrne was at Houston on her way to Sandy Point to teach on the plantation of Mr Terry Mr T being in the city at the same time I sought and interview with him and found that he could not receive her at present, and agreeable to instructions Miss Byrne was permitted to assist Mr Stuart Mr Henry Grey (colored) is teaching a school as he reports of 27 scholars I visited the at 9-30 a.m. Feb 9th and found only 2 present Mr Ward Bonner (colored) has a school of 37 scholars At the time I visited the school there were 24 scholars present This school was started about the 1st of November 1865
