At Columbia Mr Sheldon had been forced to abandon his school & had removed 2 miles in to the country & organized a small school of some 10 scholars. I believed him on investigation to be in a dangerous locality - the prejudice very strong against him and his many indiscretions had very finally brought it upon him

I consulted with him & he concluded to leave & I called the citizens both white & col together & presented school matters to them &c said the pledge of the white people to build a suitable building for a school House & Church & presented it to the Freedmen of Columbia One man gave the lot another $57.00 cash &c&c They are desirous of having an intelligent & smart Young Lady Teacher.

There are several calls for plantation teachers in that locality; and a lady teacher can be entertained at any time now at Mr. Sharps & Terry places at Chenango below Sandy Pt.
A good feeling exists in that section of country and I felt very much encouraged on this trip
