Beaumont Jefferson Co. Texas June 30th 1866 Mr E.W. Wheelock Superintendent School B.R.F. Sir In reply to your communication of June 17th I most respectfully state that on my return to Beaumont I found that there were two young men teaching here by the name of Davis- I went the next morning to visit the School and found that they were both sick with a fever. One of them died shortly afterwards. The other left the place. They only taught in the day time - did not teach Sunday School - and only had six or seven scholars. The school was closed on or about the 12th or 13th of this month I do not exactly remember I am Sir very Respectfully Your Obdt Servant C C Hardenbrook Lieut V.R.C. & Sub Asst Com B of R F and AL.
