Office Sub- Assistant Commissioner, Bureau R., F. & A. L., State of Texas. Hempstead Oct 3, 1866. E M Wheelock Supt of Freedmans Schools I have the honor to transmit herewith Reports of the Freedmens School in Hempstead for the month of September 1866 I am happy to state to you that the School is in a more prosperous condition than when I wrote you last Mrs. Renshaws health is improving and I think that she feels somewhat encouraged. I have not seen any chance to better her situation even if I could find her a better school. She could not find a decent place to board and her scholars here have done better by her since they found out that she was a going to leave them They all seem to think a great deal of her You must blame me (if anyone) for her not having a night school for she would have kept one if I would have let her but I told her that she was not fit to and I should not let her
