I have the honor to submit the following as the conditions of the Schools for Freedmen in this District for the Month of May 1866. We have but one School and that in La Grange. At last report we had 35 day scholars and 27 night scholars - now we have 30 day scholars and 6 night scholars, showing a decrease during the month of 5 day scholars and 21 night scholars. This decrease I think is mainly owing to the Measles which are prevailing to quite an extent, though I think there are other causes at work operating against us. Many white people tell the Freedmen that their children are doing little or no good at school that in keeping them there an paying for their schooling they are wasting their money, &c and if they will let them have their children, they will take care of them and educate them for nothing.
