Sir

I have the honor to submit the following as the condition of the Schools for freedmen in this District for the Month of June 1866. The only school in the District is in La Grange. At the last report we had 30 Scholars - (Day) and 6 night Scholars - now we have 27 day Scholars and no night Scholars. Showing a decrease during the Month of 3 day Scholars and 6 night Scholars. The School has not been as large as it ought to have been - considering the number of Freedmen in the neighborhood, but several causes have been operating against us among which were the Measles - influence of white persons upon the Freedmen - accd lack of money then to pay for the tuition of their children: besides this the building we occupied was an unpleasant one, and unsuited for the purpose. However, it was the best we could get, having to take that or none.
Soon after my arrival here, I started a Subscription for the purpose of saving money to build a School House. Thus far we have not succeeded in raising a great deal
