Colonel:
I have the honor to forward herewith my report of Schools in my district. On the 6th inst. Mrs. S. Harris arrived here, with authority in from the Asst Comr of this State, to commence a school for collored children. I have
rented a house for that purpose, until such time, when the collored population of this town shall be able to erect a building for a schoolhouse.

Allthough the school has been only a little over 2 weeks in progress, the numbers of scholars have increased from 19 to 42 and I have no doubt, that in course of another month or or two the numbers will reach as high as 80.

There is also a night school in opperation, consisting of 18 adults, and the teacher expresses great satisfaction with their progress. We have also a Sunday School, and it seems that all the children are anxious to go there, as it is always crowded.

The collored people of the town and vicinity have subscribed $640. for the purpose of building a schoolhouse, but as the most of them have no money now, I think it will be a few months before it can be erected.
