Clinton De Witt Co. Texas
May 31st 1866.

Col. W. H. Sinclair
Asst. Adjunct General

Colonel:

I have the honor to report that there are now 62 colored children, whose parents are willing to pay a teacher

The white population of Clinton do not only not favor this project, but do everything in their power to hinder it. It is absolutely impossible to hire a house or room for school-purposes. I have, therefore, started a collection among the colored people for the purpose of buying a house lot and building a meeting - and school - house. We are getting along nicely and will have a log house built up in three weeks from now. The colored people are very anxious to have a teacher here, and there is not doubt but the number of scholars will increase.
