Report of Capt. Edward Miller Sub Asst. Com. 
Bureau of R.F and A.L. of Schools for freedmen in his District for the month of August 1866.

There are at present 3 schools for freedmen in operation in my district, viz: 1, at Victoria; Mrs. S. C. Harris teacher, who has at present about 40 children, being a reduction of 35 since last month, but as this is the cotton picking season, the loss is easily accounted for, the children who attend school however, are improving rapidly, most of them can read and write pretty well. 2, at Goliad, Mr. R. O'Reagan, teacher, he commenced school about 3 weeks ago, and as most of the children are employed in the field now, he has but 10 or 12 at present. I saw him last week, and he said, that he had no doubt, but that he would succeed in getting a good school. 3rd Indianola, Mr. Avarne, teacher. I have not heard from since he commenced school, except [[strikethrough]] from [[/strikethrough]] through the Prov. Marshal, who wrote that the teacher arrived and that he would assist him in getting his school up. 
Mrs Cora Gould for whom I received an appointment has never called, as I do no know the lady, and understand
