High School, Rayland, Texas Dec. 14, 1866 To Lieut. Wheelock, Sup't Education, Texas, [[Dfic]]: My present employer Rev. C.C. Porston having returned from the up country, I find it may be uncertain whether I can now be in Galveston on the 20th or not, as I promised. I am waiting to get some money out of him, which is also uncertain. I hope to be able to call at your office before 1st January, with bag & baggage, - prepared to go forward without further delay. I have not by any means abandoned the idea of taking charge of one of your schools. - It is unfortunate that you yourself were not in the office when I called on 1st of last Oct. I should now be in charge of the Houston school. I would like by all means to be at a central point. I am commited with the Press, and have in view to establish a Freedman's newspaper for Texas, if through Gen. Kiddoo's and your own influence, its necessary subscriptions could be procured. The paper would be under your censorship (Over).
