Willow Lake Place (Near Sandy Point)
March 30th 1866

E.M. Wheelock

Dear Sir

I should like to report a more advanced state but hope to by' and by.

I opened my school the 26th of March, and but little could be done but teaching the Alphabet. My books had not arrived and I had but one with the letters printed large size so as many as could would crowd around and read then others. Some learned their letters - during the week but I neglected to keep account of them so I report them as I found them. It has been rainy and they had not much work to do. But most of them come quite regularly. Through rain & mud. Quite a number did not begin till the last day so my average is smaller in proportion in the report than those it was for the number enrolled.

As they had not been paid this year I did not call for the pay in advance. I find my night school laborous but they are so eager to learn that I forget all inconveniences.
