the wenches week day nights. When Gen. Gregory was here I told him of these obstacles to the success of the Govt. School. He said there could be no school in Texas except under the Freedmans Bureau & any person so teaching was liable to arrest. I informed Miss Goodwin & Nase of this fact. They suspended school for a few days but are now in operation temporarily. I suppose waiting for orders from Galveston. And how is this evil to be removed? Let a circular be issued from the office Supt. Ed. R & F. Texas signed by the Supt. & approved by the Asst. Com. for Texas embodying the idea expressed by Gen. Gregory & these men would close their schools without demurring. They have intelligence enough to know that they are imposing on the Freedmen & have stated to me that they expected to be stopped. If this one given hindrance to the success of the Govt. School be removed I see no reason why one good school large enough to require one or two Assistants may not after a while be established. If there were no tuition fee a school of twice or thrice its numbers could be had.
Hoping to hear from you very soon relative to this hindrance & other matters
