Millican Texas
May 31st 1866
To Mr E.M. Wheelock
Sir,
In compliance with orders, I address you these few lines. I have nothing to communicate which will, as I know of, interest you any, but however, I must make a start, whether I make a point, "as the Lawyer's say" or not, I leave it for you to judge. I commenced teaching in my school house, on the first of May, and since then, I have admitted fifty scholars, and I expect by next month, we will admit a great many more, for the children of the county, will not commence, until they can find boarding houses, at a convenient distance from the school house. I commenced teaching a night school on the 7th of May. We have 17 night scholars, in attendance, and they are progressing as rapidly as can be expected.
Very Respectfully
Mary & Ellen Smith
