Bastrop. June 23d 1866,

E.M. Wheelock,

Dear Sir,

A pleasant school 13 days this month. No School on the 14, & 15. In Austin, could not get a Teacher.
June 20th School Celebration, great dinner. Freedmen well pleased I have stayed as long as I possibly can. I keep the house by paying full rent. Closed school yesterday. The people understand it, a few days vacation or untill another teacher arrives. Every thing ready for a teacher to begin work.
The people will not support a person of this town; the teacher must be a stranger for the people both White & Black are very rude.
The Freedmen do not get justice & never will by those now living.

Yours very respectfully
A W. Rogers
