Tanksley's Plantation Tx.
June the 29th 1866

Lieut. Wheelock.
I hereby send you the report of this school I hope it will give satisfaction. I commenced school here on the 28th day of May, I am very well pleased with my scholars. They are all ambitious to learn. If you will be pleased in learning the progress they are making. When I opened school not one knew their letters, & now they are spelling. I expect in the course of a week, to have some of them reading. I devote as much time to instruct them as I can possibly spare.. I open school at 9 o'clock & dismiss at 3 1/2 & practice them as much as possible in Oral exercise. Lieut, will you please send me the bill for my box of books, & I will try to settle with you on the 1st of August, Writing more of importance to communicate, I remain

Respectfully,
J.A. Byrne
