Waco, Mclennon Co Tex. Aug 23rd/66 To E. M. Wheelock: The excitement caused by the unpleasant difficulty which arose between the soldiers in the place & the citizens resulting in an armed conflict between them, wherein however no one was killed or wounded except a colored man who was not in the fray, has among other things caused me to neglect my July report. I will be very careful hereafter to be very prompt. Everything is perfectly quiet & pleasant now - much better than ever before. The slight rupture has been productive of much good. My school is progressing finely. I should have been in Galveston longer this were it not for the expense attending the trip. Your Obe't Serv't D.F. Davis
