Sir,
Yesterday through Capt Miller I received my commission as Teacher in this place, for which please receive my thanks  As you will see by my accompanying monthly report my school is rather small - but for this month now commencing I hope to furnish you more favorable report. 

During the war the Confederates removed some 70 or 80 buildings from this place. that circumstance has caused a great scarcity of buildings and a corresponding increase in rent. Today I have to give up the house I have been using & look for another. 

I have suggested to the Freedmen here the idea of subscribing to build a school house by subscription, if they should do so, would the Bureau still allow them rent - if so, I think I could manage to get one erected at once.
