Sup Freedmens Schools
Galveston Texas

Sir

In compliance with your instruction I have the honor to forward herewith a copy of the "Report of School for Freedmen" for the month of October 1866.

When I first opened my School I had a large attendance of Soldiers but on finding that a large number of them could not procure Books I told them they had better wait until they were paid which accounts for such a large number leaving.

A number of the scholars had Books as the "National Service" are used by the white school of this place. The majority of my school now are soldiers I have only 17 scholars that are residents of the place.

I have 3 Reading in the Third Reader and 11 in the second Reader. The remainder reed in the Primer and first Reader. I have not been organized a sufficient length of time to report progress.

I am Sir Very Respect
Your Obdt Servt
