8. Remarks.
The freedmen of Goliad are poor and unable, in my judgement, to support much of a school. Yet they are anxious for some one to teach them; and they have my best wishes for their educational advancement in the future. During the past year, I have experienced many acts of friendship at their hands, which shall be gratefully remembered. A Happy New Year to them, and to those officers commissioned to superintend their education, whom I have found always gentlemanly and obliging.
Adieu.
