SUB-ASSISTANT COMMISSIONER'S (OR AGENTS) MONTHLY REPORT on Education of Freedmen and Refugees in Sub-District, State of Texas in charge of Byron Porter for the Month of March 1868[in accordance with Circular No. 5, Bureau R., F., &A.L.

6. Whole number of School-houses for Freedmen in your District? 3    Their condition, capacity, value and by whom owned? One almost finished in Bastrop 24x44. One on Piney six miles from Bastrop not yet finished 18x22. One at Williams Millton the river above Bastrop size not known.  All owned by freedmen.
7. Number of your visits to Schools?  2 Day? 0 Night? 1 Sabbath? 1
8. Number of educational meeting held by you during the month? one  Where?Town of Bastrop

9. Number and names of places now destitute in which Day-Schools might be organized? One in Bastrop and probably three or four at different points in the county

10.  Number of pupils (estimated ) who would attend each School? from thirty to sixty in each school

11. Amount which would probably be raised by Freedmen for school purpose in the destitute neighborhood? Impossible to tell

12. What efforts are you taking to secure the support of schools by pupils, parents, boards of education, or the State Government? i am collecting subscriptions and attending to the erection of the two school houses yet unfinished.

13. Whole number of additional School-houses for Freedmen, now wanted in Sub-District? At least two more in the county besides those already begun or finished.
14. Could you organize your Sub-District into School Districts each with a School Committee pledged to carry on school therein? I think I could if assistance could be given by the Government or State

15. To what extent would help from without be needed in each case? Half the cost of the school house and half hire of teachers
16. What is the public sentiment to the education of Freedmen and Poor Whites? The mass of the Whites take no interest whatever in Schools either for Whites or blacks

17. Are Night-Schools for Adults needed in your District? In what way could they be carried on?

18. What more can this Bureau do for educating children of Refugees (or Poor Whites)?

19. How long will Northern charities aid be needed for Freedmen and Refugee Schools of your District? Until State aid is given
