on Education of Freedmen and Refugees in Sub-District, State of Texas in charge of Brvt Maj E W Whittemore for the Month of June 1868, [in accordance with order contained in Circular No. 5, Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen and Abandoned Lands.]

1. Name of your Sub-District? Bexar, Comal Medina, Atuscusa Bandara & Kendall counties
2. Whole number of Refugee or Freedmen's Schools in the District? 2 Day? - Night? - Sabbath?
3. Location of Schools? Both schools are in the city of San Antonio one situated at Head of Blum Creek.
4. Whole number of Teachers? White? 2 Colored? -
5. Names and post-office address of Day-School Teachers? Dr. Keith San Antonio Miss Mattie Emory San Antonio
6. Whole number of School-houses for Freedmen in your District? Their condition, capacity, value and by whom owned?
7. Number of your visits to Schools? Day? Night? Sabbath?
8. Number of educational meetings held by you during the month? Where?
9. Number and names of places, now destitute, in which Day Schools might be organized?

have been trying to arouse some of the most angelic of the freedmen in this subdistrict to collect funds for building purposes but most with little or no success in the matter. one schoolhouse was completed in short time since by the bureau and a school taught therein by Dr. Keith

Until the Freed people show a disposition to earn more than enough for their present support
