on Education of Freedmen and Refugees in Sub-District, State of Texas in charge of YMK Smith Cap 26 Inf for the Month of June 1868, [in accordance with order contained in Circular No. 5, Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen and Abandoned Lands.]

2. Whole number of Refugee or Freedmen's Schools in the District? 5 Day? 5 Night? Sabbath? 10

3. Location of Schools? Harrison Co & Marion Co

4. Whole number of Teachers? 5 White? 2 Colored? 3

5. Names and post-office address of Day-School Teachers? Messrs. Clareson & Smith Jefferson Mario[[?]] Wm. Massey Caroline Poe Coleman Clark Marshall Texas

6. Whole number of School-houses for Freedmen in your District? 3 Their condition, capacity, value and by whom owned? Condition poor. Capacity 250 pupils $700 each J. Lang Caroline Poe & Thomas Ward

7. Number of your visits to Schools? Day? Night? Sabbath?  I visit the schools once a week

8. Number of educational meetings held by you during the month?  none  Where?

9. Number and names of places, now destitute, in which Day-Schools might be organized? Henderson Rusk Co Carthage Panola Co Gilmen Upshaw Co

10. Number of pupils estimated who would attend such Schools?  Five hundred

11. Amount which would probably be raised by the Freedmen, for school purposes, in each destitute neighborhood? The freed people are unable to raise any fund in this Sub-District - owing to the short crop each year

12. What efforts are you making to secure the support of schools by pupils, parents, boards of education, or State government?

13. Whole number of additional School-Houses, for Freedmen, now wanted in your Sub-District.  4

14. Could you organize your Sub-District into School Districts, each with a School Committee pledged to carry on schools therein?  no

15. To what extent would help from without be needed in such cases?  By employing Salaried Teachers

16. What is the public sentiment as to the education of the Freedmen and poor Whites?  The mass of people are willing for the education of the freedmen but are unwilling to render any assistance.

17. Are Night-Schools for Adults needed in your District? Yes In what way could they be carried on?  By employing salaried Teachers

18. What more can this Bureau do for educating the children of the Refugees (or Poor Whites)?  "Poor whites" would consider any assistance coming from the "Bureau" an indignity

19. How long will northern charitable aid be needed for Freedmen and Refugee Schools of your District?  As there has never been any aid given to the freedmen in this Sub-district I am unable to answer
