on Education of Freedmen and Refugees in Sub-District No 36, State of Texas in charge of Charles Haughn Sub Asst Com'r for the month of July 1868, [in accordance with order contained in Circular no. 5, Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen and Abandoned Lands.]

6. Whole number of School-houses for Freedmen in your District? 1 Their condition, capacity, value and by whom owned? Good For seventy five. Owned by the F.M. of the U.S.A. in this Vicinity.

7. Number of your visits to Schools? 4 Day? 4 Night? - Sabbath? -

8. Number of educational meetings held by you during the month? ≠ Where? Waco

9. Number and names of places, now destitute, in which Day-Schools might be organized? Five, in which I expect to organize schools during this month

10. Number of pupils (estimated) who would attend such Schools? Two Hundred

11. Amount which would probably be raised by the Freedmen, for school purposes, in each destitute neighborhood? Impossible for me to tell, probably enough to pay the teacher

12. What efforts are you making to secure the support of schools by pupils, parents, boards of education, or State government? I am procuring teachers hiring houses in which to teach & am building one house

13. Whole number of additional School Houses, for Freedmen, now wanted in your Sub-District. Six that I know of

14. Could you organize your Sub-District into School Districts, each with a School Committee pledged to carry on schools therein? I think I can

15. To what extent would help from without be needed in such cases? In some case to rent houses & in all a general superintendance

16. What is the public sentiment as to the education of the Freedmen and poor Whites? I think the majority of the people are in favor of educating them

17. Are Night-Schools for Adults needed in your District? Yes  In what way could they be carried on? They can not be carried on at this time of year but can be carried on by the f.m. on plantations after the crops are harvested,

18. What more can this Bureau do for educating the children of Refugees (or Poor Whites)? Exercise a general superintendance in some case furnish school houses in others furnish teachers

19. How long will northern charitable aid be needed for Freedmen and Refugee Schools of your District? Until the present generation of southerners are dead.
