very far from being efficient, keeping very poor order, the scholars learning mechanically &c I suggested an improvement in these respects, which he promised to apply. I also informed the freed people at this place that I should discharge the building used as a school House unless they supported the school and increased the number of pupils. This had the desired effect and in July Twenty five (25) day scholars & Ten (10) night scholars were reported. I was informed by a Freedman that a move had been made to build a House for school & church purposes with sucess. I tried hard to accomplish this in 1867 but the loss of crops so disheartened the freedmen that nothing was done I hope to be able to discharge the rental of the building at an early day

The School at Navasota kept by Jerry Rinehart col'd is very poorly supported having but 10 to 15 scholars in June & a portion of July. The school has been closed for the last four week, commences again the coming month. The teacher has great confidence in his power and ability in teaching, and but little else to recommend him in the cause of education. There ought to be a good school at this point and well supported

A school was started at Barker Prairie between Navasota and Millican by Rev Rich Sloan under my direction about the 1st of July. The school had a sufficient number of scholars (about 45) but they could not raise money enough to pay the teacher, or in fact to board him
