county are very good this year, and from this same the freedmen are amply able to support a good school, and would do so if they had a teacher who was qualified and would command their respect. There is also a number of adult person in the town who would attend a night school, but for the reason I have above stated, so for the above reasons I would respectfully request that if possible a good teacher be sent to this place.

I am now engaged in raising money for the purpose of building a church for the freedmen, and so far we have been remarkable successfull, the white people of this town have subscribed for a large amount, and I think we will be able to build a church which will cost about $4000. I intend to push the thing on as fast as possible. The freedmen are very much interested in church affairs, and I am satisfied that if there was a good teacher here it could be taken advantage of to turn into school matters.
