on Education of Freedmen and Refugees in 30th Sub-District, State of Texas, in charge of Lt. Gregory Barrett Jr 26 Infy for the month of September 1868, [in accordance with order contained in Circular No. 5 , Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen and Abandoned Lands.]

3. Location of Schools? Tyler Smith Co, Garden Valley, Smith Co and one about ten miles S.E. of Tyler, Smith Co Texas

4. Whole number of Teachers? 3 White 1 Colored? 2

5. Names and post-office address of Day-School Teachers? Mrs. Mary Stripling, Tyler. Texas; Guilford Murphy, Garden Valley, Smyth Co Texas, and Henry Black, Tyler. Texas

6.Whole number of School-houses for Freedmen in your District? 1  Their condition, capacity, value and by whom owned? Condition good: Capacity, sufficient for locality; Value Unknown; Owned by John M Clay; the other schools are held at the houses of the teachers

7. Number of your visits to Schools? 8 Day? 4 Night? 0 Sabbath? 4

8.Number of educational meetings held by you during the month? 0 Where? 0

9. Number and names of places, now destitute in which Day-Schools might be organized? Canton, Vanzandt Co. Athens, Henderson Co and Quitman, Wood Co.

10. Number of pupils (estimated) who would attend such Schools? Not Known

11. Amount which would probably be raised by the Freedmen, for school purposes, in each destitute neighborhood? Not Known

12. What efforts are you making to secure the support of schools by pupils, parents, boards of education, or State government? I am using proper exertions to secure support of Schools by pupils and parents.

13. Whole number of additional School-Houses, for Freedmen, now wanted in your Sub-District. Two

14. Could you organize your Sub-District into School Districts, each with  School Committee pledged to carry on schools therein? No

15. To what extent would help from without be needed in such cases? To the full extent

16. What is the public sentiment as to the education of the Freedman and poor Whites? Very Bad

17. Are Night-Schools for Adults needed in your District? Yes  In what way could they be carried on? By the Bureau renting buildings and employing teachers

18. What more can this Bureau do for educating the children of Refugees (or Poor Whites)? Nothing

19. How long will northern charitable aid be needed for Freedman and Refugee Schools of your District? As long as the government fails to give aid.
