SUB-ASSISTANT COMMISSIONER'S (OR AGENT'S) MONTHLY REPORT
on Education of Freedmen and Refugees in Sub-District, State of Texas in charge of Louis W. Stevenson for the Month of December 1868, [in accordance with order contained in Circular No. 5, Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen and Abandoned Lands.]

3. Location of Schools? Columbus Colorado County -

4. Whole number of Teachers? 2 White? 2 Colored?

5. Names and post-office address of Day-School Teachers? Henry French Columbus. Louis E. Beaumont Columbus. Mr. Beaumont has had no school this mo.

6. Whole number of School-houses for Freedmen in your District? 2 Their condition, capacity, value, and by whom owned?
Columbus House good - 200 children $900 - Trustees Freedmen School Association
Jones Bend Poor - 50 children - House on Jones Plantation.

7. Number of your visits to Schools? 8 Day? 4 Night? - Sabbath? 4

8. Number of educational meetings held by you during the month? 1 Where? Columbus

9. Number and names of places, now destitute, in which Day-Schools might be organized? Osage - Hamington Plantation, Alleyton, Carltons, Neusem's [[Sart's?]] Wilkinsons Anderson's Plantation - Central Prairie Point & Fralesburg, Jones Plantation, school will probably reopen on the 1st of January - Mr. Beaumont being still there.

10. Number of pupils (estimated) who attend such Schools? From 40 @ 200 pupils -

11. Amount which would probably be raised by the Freedmen, for school purposes, in each destitute neighborhood? - Under the direction of suitable Teachers, who would engineer the building of one house & urge the people on think on many of the places suitable houses could be built with very little assistance - could not say how much. The Freed people have sold their crop well & got the money - Plenty

12. What efforts are you making to secure the support of schools by pupils, parents, boards of education, or State government? The weather has been so inclement that it has been most impossible to get the people together this month, outside of efforts in what may have done nothing

13. Whole number of additional School-Houses, for Freedmen, now wanted in your Sub-District. Ten

14. Could you organize your Sub-District into School Districts, each with a School Committee pledged to carry on schools therein?
Think it may be done another year - if crops turn out well -

15. To what extent would help from without be needed in such cases? Since the crops have been gathered & sold & the freedmen have so much money - do not think that another year much would be required.

16. What is the public sentiment as to education of the Freedmen and poor Whites? Good

17. Are Night-Schools for Adults needed in your District? Yes In what way could they be carried on? 
Only where there is a day school & by the teacher thereof

18. What more can this Bureau do for educating the children of Refugees (or Poor Whites)? Send Reliable teachers

19. How long will northern charitable aid be needed for Freedmen and Refugee Schools of your District? More or less - for a year to two to come. Think the freedmen will be sufficiently self reliant & awake to the importance of education that if the crops turn out well, they will push the matter themselves even though the General Government should withdraw the assistance & then shall do nothing after that time
