on Education of Freedmen and Refugees in Sub-District, State of 23d in charge of T H Baker for the month of December 1868, [in accordance with order contained in Circular No. 5, Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen and Abandoned Lands.]

2. Whole number of Refugee or Freedmen's Schools in the District? 4 Day? 4 Night? 0 Sabbath? 2

3. Location of Schools? Plumb Creek, Prairie Lea San Marcos & Blanco

4. Whole number of Teachers? 4? White? 3 Colored? 1

5. Names and post-office address of Day-School Teachers? Nancy Kavanaugh. Plumb Creek. Mary Patterson Prairie Lea. Jacob Glenn San Marcos, W Cassey San Marcos.

8. Number of educational meetings held by you during the month? 0 Where? none especially for the purpose

9. Number and name of places, now destitute, in which Day-Schools might be organized? Crossing of Plumb Creek on Gonzals Road. Tinney Creek &c

10. Number of pupils (estimated) who would attend such Schools? from 30 to 40 in each neighborhood

11. Amount which would probably be raised by the Freedmen, for school purposes, in each destitute neighborhood? half of them would pay their tuition promptly

12. What efforts are you making to secure the support of schools by pupils, parents, boards of education, or State government? Talking to them like a father to his son

13. Whole number of additional School-House, for Freedmen, now wanted in you Sub-District. 2 or 3

14. Could you organize your Sub-District into School Districts, each with a School Committee pledged to carry on schools therein? I could not.

15. To what extent would help from without be needed in such cases? about half the amt necessary

16. What is the public sentiment, as to the education of the Freedmen and poor Whites? Recently there have been but little said on the Subject, no open oposition

17. Are Night Schools for Adults needed in your District? I cannot say. In what way could they be carried on? I doubt when a sufficient no. would attend to justify a teacher to teach.

18. What more can this Bureau do for educating the children of Refugees (or Poor Whites)? Furnish money if it has it & competent Teachers

19. How long will northern charitable aid be needed for Freedmen and Refugee Schools of your District? It is not in my power to say.
