Sir, 
A letter has been referred to this office by Colonel W.B. Royall Commanding Military Post of Morganton N.C written by York Martin (freedman) in which he states that you have persuaded one of his boys off, and claim that he was bound to you by the Court without York Martins knowing anything about it. If the boy has been bound to you I respectfully request that you furnish this office with a copy of the Indenture of Apprenticeship, and if he is not bound to you. I hereby notify you that you will be held responsible for payment of the boys labor for every day he works for you, as the boy is underage, and no legal right to make a contract without his Fathers consent. And you are represented as retaining the boy in your employ in opposition to his Fathers will, and going after him, after his Father had taken him
