110 128 office Bu R.F.& A.L. Lincolnton N.C. October 8" 1868 Dchinck Miss E.G. Gardners Ford P.O. Cleveland Co. N.C. Madam I have to day received a letter from Doctor H.C. Vogell Superintendent of Education of the Bu R.F. &c dated Raleigh N.C. October 8 1868, in which he states that he is authorized to pay a monthly rental of [[?]]8 for the School house at Philadelphia Cleveland Co. N.C. to be paid to William Schenck. Rent cannot be paid to William Schenck for the above mentioned building for any month during which the School is not in actual operation, nor for any month for which it is not duly reported to this office. If you do not receive a blank report to make a report of your School, write to Dr. H.C. Vogell Supt of Education at Raleigh N.C. before the 10th October to send you paid blank report, which you are to make out and send to him before the 20th of each month. Colonel, I have the honor to inclose herewith an Estimate for Materials required to make the School house at this place comfortable, and to request that permission be granted to purchase the same. The Freedmen are willing to do the labor but they are unable to raise the money to make the necessary repairs or purchase the material. This is one of the best, if not the best conducted Schools for the Freedmen in this part of the State, Col Johnston visited this School when last in Lincolnton, and will recalled the condition of the building, which has been getting worse since that time, The amount estimated $35.50 will make the building comfortable for both day & night school this coming winter. The school is now in repair and will be so during the winter. Mr H.C. Shoates Teacher has recently arrived here to take charge of the school, having been sent out by the Society of Friends, he appears to be well adapted for the position of teacher.
