at Tehuantepec. Also the white flowered tree with cotton pods & spiny bark - 2 species of Cereus & 2 of Opuntia were numerous. One of the former is slender with woolly head. All 4 species are large. ⁋ From Totolapa the hills were below 4000 until we crossed a divide at 5000 ft. near Los Bichones. Between this & San Carlos found the long-leafed pine with long cones - same as that on border of val. near Miahuatlan - common down to 5000 ft. Further on these pines were seen at 4000 ft. & a mahogany tree 20 ft. high having both fruit & flowers was seen at 4200 ft. on an open hillside among scattered scrub-oaks & pines. Near San Carlos the Pines were seen at 3000 ft. close to banana patches. The rose-fl. tree & yel. fl. willow-like tree were common there also. 
Campylor. humilis, Tityra per., Trogon citreolus, Eugyptila, Cassie, melanicterus etc. Common at San Carlos also are Juga, the ear pod tree, ficus, etc. At 2200 ft. near San Bartolo was seen the first Guat. Ivory bill & at 3000 ft. Petz's parakeet.
¶Everywhere below 4500 ft. the large land snail was common. Near Las Vacas the large cone pines were seen at 2000 ft.  The hills all along the route were covered with a varying growth of thorny bushes
