4 Eyed Fish
on the water have an odd appearance when the water is muddy enough to conceal the bodies. These projecting eyes seem to serve to find small fragments of floating food as I saw these fish swim to one side or another & eat small floating substances that came within range of these projecting eyes. Strangely enough these fish have their eyes divided so that just below the water line & turned obliquely downward is another pair of eyes the ball of which unites with the ball of the upper eye but each having a distinct iris & pupil. A narrow line of tissue appears to divide the two eyes on the surface & the lower eye is somewhat flattened. The following sketch gives an ides of the their relationship. [[sketch]] In the water these lower eyes are invisible from above & must serve to to see in the water while the other pair are looking about in the air. These eyes for the air are very useful & when the fish is swimming near shore, if one comes along the bank no matter how cautiously they at once move away & keep on the alert & at the first hostile movement the fish rush away in a series of remarkable frog-like leaps over the surface of the water. These leaps are made by a vigorous movement of the tail as far as I could tell after watching them closely a number of times. The body of the fish has a slightly upward curve & although they will dive below the surface when closely pursued yet very quickly they come to the top again a short distance away. Some that I watched in clear water
