All about Tehuantepec is a broad coast plain with scattered hills & low mountains from 100 to 1000 ft. high rising island like amid the general level.  Both hills & plains are covered with a low growth of trees & bushes averaging from 20 to 25 ft. high over most of the country| but showing areas of larger growth of wild fig & other trees where the ground is low & damp.  The vegetation is that of the arid Tropical belt & many species found at Acapulco are numerous here.  Just above the city are irrigated fields of cane, cava, cocoanut, palms & bananas-
Below the town the bottomlands along the river are farmed partly by irrigation but mainly by the uncertain rainfall - for the two years past no rains have fallen sufficient to give a crop by this method.
The most remarkable thing about the city of Tehuantepec is its fine women & their very remarkably picturesque & handsome costumes.  The women are finely built, tall, straight and from the constant carrying of burdens on their heads [[strikethrough]] they [[/strikethrough]] from childhood they have a grace of motion in walking that I have never seen equaled in such a number of individuals.  They are physically robust & the animal [[orginization?]] so perfect that it adds greatly to the charm
