ehose tall graceful figures & fine faces would attract attention anywhere. They do a great amount of talking & gossiping with much laughter so that the scene is a remarkably animated one of voices, bright colors & moving figures among which an artist could find an embarrassing richness of models worthy his most skillful touch. The fruits and small articles as well as the marketing of the buyers are commonly in large gourds gaily painted with flowers on the outside. These are said to come from Chiapas and are usually carried on the head filled with various articles of food or other object. To stand about the playa and watch the going & coming of these brightly costumed women is a fascinating thing & was a source of never-ending interest to me.

It is rather hard to have to record that the men here have nothing of the grace & build of their women but have round shoulders & a loose & slouching gait & seem in everything to be inferior to the women- The huipil or lacework headdress of the women appears to me to be a relic of the ancient zapoteco dress (these people are Zapotecos) as it gives the same general effect as many of the Zapotecan headdresses figured on imaged, or idols [[strikethrough]] worn by [[/strikethrough]] dug out of old burial places in the valley of Oaxaca- This headdress is worn in a number of different ways according to the thing
