& Lepus callotis is a curious fact of distribution. The Coyote also occurs rather commonly & the [[strikethrough]] charadrius [[/strike]] Squatarola helvetica in full breeding plumage was also common, but the sexual organs were not in usual breeding condition.
¶›The people of San Mateo are very industrious & the fish caught in the afternoon of one day are slightly salted by smearing over them saline mud from the shore of the laguna & then they are carried into Tehuantepec or other neighboring markets on the backs of the men & women at night so that they are for sale early the next morning. The mud washes off readily leaving the fish apparently fresh & clean.
When about the village the men ordinarily wear nothing but a pair of cotton trousers [[?]] rolled up to the thigh so that they are nearly naked. Some of them however wear the cotton blouse or shirt. Nearly everyone had the finished end of a long cast-net about his waist & was busily at work adding to the unfinished end as he walked about or sat talking with the others. Others had [[strikethrough]] a [[/strikethrough]] spindles & balls of twine with which they were making hard two strand twine for nets. The spindle would be set whirling & then while the left hand held the cord the right hand was raised high in the air & the cord passed over it in the crotch of the thumb & passed down to the whirling spindle swinging free near the ground. The spindle whorls were of hard, heavy wood or of clay with a cross-section thus: [[image]] & round in outline. The people here have rather short figures with irregular features. Their dress is the same as that of the adjacent Zapotecas.
