men on the road say the bridges must be fixed & strengthened before they can be used. Trains now run from 12 to 15 m. an hour.

On June 2d started back on the train- The English Supt. of the tobacco ranch at La Puerta. Mr. Gault who came in [[strikethrough]] Sat [[/strikethrough]] on the train with me returned to the ranch- He is badly used up by malarial fever which everyone says is very bad in the forest about La Puerta. Flies, gnats, mosquitoes & ticks also abound here. At Coatzocoalcos I met two men from Kansas City who are interested in a scheme to sell lands for coffee planting in the low country 15 miles back from the R.R. So far as I can learn it is a scheme for duping people out of their money- One man is agent to sell lands, another one is a contractor who for a certain sum per acre agrees to clear, plant & attend to the land until the coffee is in bearing. While looking on me as a possible buyer they made some of the most absurd statements as to results which showed their desire to sell by misrepresentation. Their prospectus is also full of unreliable & untruthful statements. The outcome will be that the buyers of land here will be badly duped- In their prospectus they show that an investment of 1000 will yield 100000 in ten years.
