At Santo Domingo the children came to their fathers' [[strikethrough]] each [[/strikethrough]] uncles or other near male relative early each a.m. & stopping just in front of him fold their arms tightly & bow their heads. The man then puts his hand on their heads & says good morning whereupon the youngsters run off about their play. On the Isthmus this custom seems to prevail generally & replaces to a great extent the kissing of the hand of the elder as is done in many places. Many of the children of the houses where we stopped would come up to us for our salute as to their fathers.*

We soon had a number of boys & men enlisted in the search for the mammals we were after particularly. During or stay here several rainy nights were passed and the family bring drowned out of their hut begged shelter with us. A large number of the people here are "pintos" - our host being on of them. When a man begins to get this disease they way he has brown spots & these can be cured with sarsapanilla - after a time the brown spots lose their color & become white & then they are incurable - In some of the white marked men I noticed that the skin over the white marks, when those were large, was shiny & wrinkled something like the appearance of skin over a large scar of a burn - Occasionally also I saw them have a scaly or scurvy appearance. The people here, as about Lagunas have had much dealing with foreigners during the time of the R.R. work and are all very friendly. A considerable number of half breed children are found through the villages of the Isthmus. The mts. forming the divide [[strikethrough]] near [[/strikethrough]] which the R.R. crosses to reach Chivela as well as the hills scattered over the plain [[strikethrough]] & of [[/strikethrough]] & about Sto- Domingo are limestone. Sto. Domingo is close to the base of the [[strikethrough]] [[?]] [[/strikethrough]] end of the main range that ends on the w. side of the plain of Chivela - In a high ridge like mt. reaching an alt. of 2000 or 3000ft. near the village is a cave about 250ft. deep with a high vaulted roof & beautifully adorned with stalactites & stalagmite, The former hang from the roof
