Mije Tribe. It is at an alt. of about 900 ft among the foothills bordering the west side of the pass on the middle of the Isthmus. 

Through having been badly directed we made a detour out of our course at first on our way here but finally got back onto the main trail by keeping the proper courses after learning of our error from some people we met along the first part of the trail. At first we followed down the valley of the creek and found the narrow bottomlands overgrown with fine forests- Leaving the bottoms the woods quickly decreased in size on the barren hills of gneiss and the scattered woods of small pines 30-50 ft. high with two species of scrubby oaks covered the slopes & ridges scantily a fine but rather thin growth of grass was found everywhere as a sheet of brilliant green beneath the darker green of the scattered trees. During this season while the rains keep the vegetation green & fresh this open grassy park- like forest presents a beautiful aspect with its ever changing vistas and distant views of mountain and valley- When we came near the edge of the mountains descending toward San Juan we passed a number of
