On May 1st we went on to Jilitta. The trail led over several ridges covered with grass & forest all showing that they are in a more humid country than Valles by their vivid green color although the rainy season has not set in yet. In early morning a fog hung over the hills & hid the high mts. about San Juan.

We finally crossed a beautiful river valley and found the water surprisingly cold. Although in the midst of the tropic lowlands here yet it comes out of caves in the limestone mountains with a temperature much lower than that of the air. Beyond the river the trail led us up over about 5 or 6 miles of the most excessively rough slope of ragged limestone rock that we have ever found. One mule fell, several times & we were delayed sometime by this piece of road. We crossed a ridge over 3000 ft high
