& descended gradually beyond through a heavy tropical forest to Jilitta. At the top of the first rise on this rocky trail we were in the midst of a fine forest & the trees were full of vireo flavoviridis & [[?]] grayi singing in the greatest bird chorus I ever heard. Now & then the notes of a myadestes was heard through the medley of other notes.

Jilitta is on the top of a narrow ridge with a deep caƱon on each side & reminds me of town of Pluma in Oaxaca - both are the centres of coffee plantations.  Learning that we must cut a road for 20 or 25 miles through the forest to reach the summit of San Juan Mt. & as the rains have already begun we decided not to attempt this mountain now but to return to the R.R. at once. Monkeys Mackaws & [[temesali?]] deer are found here.

May 2nd, we started back & camped a little before reaching Huehuetlan
