was a hideous series of wasps in sullen ferocity & brutality. [v?] The top of ridge is overgrown with scrubby oaks in which a few blue birds, Jays & Allens Squirrels were seen- the latter being rather common. When we reached the slope into Jaumave Valley the regulation had become of an extremely arid character and a small species of agave called the lechugilla was extremely abundant over the [[strikethrough]] hills [[/strikethrough]] slope often covering the ground thickly over considerable areas. This plant is the source of a great fiber industry in Jaumave Valley & thence N.T.S. to [[?]] & Saltillo. We rode across the valley from our camp. the road leading through mesquite thickets & other small brushy growth alternating with patches of Agaves, various cactuses & Yuccas. Arid Lower Sonoran in Character. Bob White Quail common. Took dinner at a Hda. in the middle of the Valley & in the far P.M. reached the forlorn little town of Jaumave. The place has a population of 3 or 4000 people who farm the valley & make agave fiber called The mayor of the place was polite & had a room the-
