Charleston 29 Sept 1865

To Bvt. Maj. Gen. R. Saxton,

The undersigned P.F.C. Madsen, respectfully sets forth, that he is the owner of a house known as No. 6 West Street in this city: that he left the confederacy in the year 1864 to avoid conscription: that he left the said house in the possession of a duly authorized agent: that it has therefore never been abandoned: that he has not been voluntarily absent therefrom, his leaving the city having been a matter of necessity to avoid service in the rebel army: that he has always been loyal to the Union and has neither by thought or deed or and, aided or encouraged the rebellion: that he has taken the oath of allegiance and the oath of amnesty and is not included in any of the classes excepted from the benefits of the President's proclamation: and he therefore prays that the said house, the titles for which are herewith submitted be restored to his possession.
