Columbia Texas May 11th 1867

The school at Brazoria was opened Apl 1st Teacher read his appointment Apl 11/67 Lot has been purchased to build and deed accorded but Freedman lack  enterprise and ability to go to work and erect the frame.

A lot has been purchased in Columbia & deed accorded [[crossed out]] but Freedmen [[/crossed out]] and in the hands of Trustees who  are awaiting the building material promised them Missionary Aid Society

A suitable house has been purchased by the Freedman for $600, $200 has been paid the balance to be paid Dec 1st 1867

Is authorized by the Agt Genl that Goverment will give $500 towards the completion of the school house The plan for appropriating this aid is uniform and cannot well under the act of appropriation be raised 
The Government will enter in to contract for the completion of the building and when fulfilled will pay the $500.

Freedmen have purchased a suitable house and everything bid fair for abundant success.

Reports a house will soon be completed on Brushey Creek north of this when another good school will be in operation as soon as it is done

States freedpeople have raised a small sum of money for the purpose of building but [[strikethrough]]at present little has been done[/strikethrough]] it will be some time before they will commence operation
May 31/67 Authorized Genl Mason to contract for completing said school building to an amount not exceeding $800-

Reports freed men are building a log house, but it will require some little amount to fit it up on the Cibilo in this Co In referance to puting up a building in this city for schools I find them so divided that I have concluded to divide the aid Authorized viz $800- equally between these buildings will then be two good schools, and two good teachers needed.

Austin Jany 23 1867
States that one Sam Birney a col'd man had  succeeded in getting from Mr Alley a promise in writing to sell him a lot of half an acre on the edge of the town, price was $50. As soon as S. Birney get a deed he will turn it over to col'd Trustees then a building will be erected for church and school purposes Number of col'd mechanics are ready to put up building free of charge as soon as material is furnish
