Retrofitting for New 2000 Candlepower Centerline Lights

Seven of the initial 23 Category II airports are presently equipped with 300 candlepower lights. RVR minima at these locations will be limited to 1200 RVR night, 1600 RVR day. Retrofitting of these locations with the L-850 centerline lights is explained in detail in agency Notice 5100.81, dated 1/8/68, "Eligibility Under the FAAP Retrofitting Lights for Category II Runways."

*Tailored Localizer Course Width

Change 10 to the USSFIM specifies that localizer courses shall be adjusted to an optimum sector width of 700 feet at the approach threshold but not to exceed angular limits of 3 degrees minimum and 6 degrees maximum. Due to the inability of the localizer course width monitor to properly respond to out-of-tolerance course width conditions for eight loop and waveguide antenna systems, this project has been discontinued on these antenna systems pending development of installation and adjustment criteria. See agency Order 8200.21 on this subject. Required adjustment to course sector width of V-ring localizer antennas in compliance with Change 10 should be accomplished.

Critical Areas

Criteria for the marking, lighting and identification of Category II critical areas is contained in agency Notice N 5340.9.

Category II Approach Lights

Agency Order 6910.2A, "Revised Installation Criteria for Approach Lighting Systems w/Sequenced Flashers ALS/SFL," covers Category II ALS installations.

Decision Height

A Flight Inspection Convair (N-101) has been instrumented with a radio altimeter to provide flight check capability to inspect in-flight readout of the decision height. Contact National Flight Inspection Division, FS-600, for aircraft scheduling.

*Far-Field Monitors (FA66WA-1495, Wilcox)

Prior to adapting far-field monitoring for locations as a Category II standard, it has been recommended by the Operations Services to conduct an evaluation at two Category II candidate airports to determine its effectiveness and establish operational procedures. These locations have been selected at Denver, Colorado,
