OBITURARY

The AHS regrets the sudden death of one of its members, Mr. Aras William Franklin, Asst. Chief (Technical Aviation Dept.) Transportation School, Fort Eustis, Va.

Mr. Franklin was born Aug. 24, 1902 in Warwick, Va., and died June 13 1955 at Newport News, Va. Surviving Mr. Franklin are his wife, Mr. Mare Bradford Franklin, 2 sons, and 4 daughter.

In 1953 Mr. Franklin was placed on a committee to develop a plan for the assumption of aviation maintenance training for the U.S. Army by the Transportation Corps' School at Ft. Eustis, Va. On June 30, 1953, this plan was presented to representatives of the Dept. of the Army, Army field forces and the Chief of Transportation. This plan was approved by these representatives and was the basis for the gigantic Army aviation maintenance program now being conducted by the Transportation School.

Upon activation of the Aviation Department in September of 1953, Mr. Franklin was appointed Assistant Chief, Technical Aviation Dept. and retained that position until his death. Prior to this time, Mr. Franklin worked in an instructor's capacity in the automotive maintenance field from 1920 to 1953. He was one of the charter members of the Hampton Roads section of the AHS, a graduate of the Sparton School of Aeronautics, Tulsa, Okla.
